NOTES FROM A LIFE IN IRELAND

A New Upstairs Room

When we had the new roof installed we asked the builders to provide us with another little room above the present bathroom. It was to be accessed through what was once a small back window and the landing at the north side of the house.

The builder dutifully did this....

We knocked out the old window, the sill, and took the old wall down to the level of the internal landing.

The inside was basically a framework of wood leading into the roofspace.

We inserted insulation between the wood sections....

The ripped out part of the staircase and rebuilt it so we had two steps leading up to the new room. We had to set the door a meter into the room to make a small landing, to conform with building regulations... Otherwise someone stepping out through the door might have gone straight down the stairs... It remains now to clad the interior with wood. This was supposed to be a second bathroom, but so far it's been really useful as a spare bedroom, despite it's unfinished state.
