NOTES FROM A LIFE IN IRELAND

A New Kitchen

The new-build now houses a bathroom and a utility room. The last space in this part has been a dump for several years. It's finally time to turn it into a kitchen and hallway. The fist step is to build another internal wall.

The first job, once the new wall is up, is to take off the render on what was once the outside wall of the house, install the water pipes, and make that wall good.

The next job was the ceiling. We fitted insulated plasterboard, and then clad it with wood.

The walls were plastered, and I found a neat Iron light fitting in a secondhand shop.

We were going to have to leave floor tiles for another day, but my mother then gave us money to buy them, which was amazingly generous. It meant we could finish the room.

I found a dresser in a secondhand shop that was exactly right for the kitchen. Old and tatty, but it suits the space.

We relocated all the kitchen units into this room.

Leaving the old kitchen looking fairly grim... This will be changed into a living room.

But the next job will be to make good the entrance hall.
