NOTES FROM A LIFE IN IRELAND

Upstairs Rooms

The upstairs middle room is now my study, but the rooms right and left of it are bedrooms still in a state of disrepair. We have inserted new chimneys liners and repaired the wall, two new windows have been inserted, and finished with plaster, but the rooms have no ceilings. It took a couple of years before the two bedrooms were in any way usable. I won't go into the detail, as it is an ongoing  continuation of repairing, inserting ceilings, insulation, but the images give a fairly good idea of what we were coping with.

Before finishing the two upstairs rooms - either side of the study - we first had to take a look in the attic. We put boards all through andinfilled with insulation. We then put thin sheets of ply over that as the plaster behind the roof slates falls off from time to time and creates a dusty mess. Once the house is reroofed there will be roofing felt and modern tiles, but in the meantime we are coping with what we have. Once this is done, we put a water tank in - above the airing cupboard in the bedroom below.

Then all the internal walls are tidied, rendered and plastered.

At this stage we can't afford the insulated plasterboard for the ceilings, but we at least have bedrooms that are clean and usable.
